The high potential of vines older than 35 years has generated considerable enthusiasm amongst South African viticulturists, winemakers and international wine experts. The number of Old Vines wines from individual sites is increasing. More and more winemakers are grasping the opportunity to transform these grapes into high quality, complex wines with an emphasis on the origin. The South African wine industry has identified around 3,500 hectares of old vines within the last 15 years. South Africa is the first and to date the only wine country in the world to have protected the term "old vines". The introduction of a "Certified Heritage Vineyard" seal demonstrates the extraordinary value of these wines.
Sommelier Jo Wessels uses the example of three selected Old Vines wines to portray the opportunities that this new wine category offers to sophisticated gastronomy. The South African-born sommelier works as head sommelier in Opus V (Mannheim) and has already won numerous sommelier competitions in his short professional career and is one of the TOP-25 best sommeliers in the world (ASI).
